Partnership projects with schools and nurseries
Opera is best experienced and appreciated when seen and felt in person. Furthermore, the diverse range of operatic subjects offers the opportunity to explore themes in an interdisciplinary way and, through the medium of musical theatre, to gain new perspectives on social or historical issues. We offer a range of educational programmes for school groups, designed to introduce each age group to the genre and its unique characteristics. Teachers have the opportunity to learn about or expand their knowledge of music theatre teaching methods with us.

We are embarking on a new three-year partnership with a Berlin nursery, in which the children are introduced to this particular performing art in a way that is appropriate for their age, alternating between watching and performing musical theatre, and are also able to get actively involved themselves. As part of a TUKI partnership, the nursery’s teaching staff work in creative teams with one of our musical theatre educators to bring the TUKI concept to life. From the very start, the further training of the nursery staff in musical theatre education also plays a major role.
We have been in a three-year partnership with Herder Gymnasium in Berlin Westend, and this season marks our second year working together on the TUSCH project. Following an introductory phase in the first year, during which pupils gained an insight into the opera house and music theatre education, the focus in the second year is on developing our own music theatre production together.
Alongside the world premiere of Bára Gísladóttir’s opera Good Vibes Only on the Main Stage, a Year 10 class is developing their own play about the digital age. The focus is on social media and information overload: what are pupils fed up with, and how do they cope with the daily sensory overload? Billions of search queries and the constant availability of knowledge and entertainment shape their everyday lives – but at what point does it all become too much? In March 2027, this work-in-progress will be presented at the TUSCH Festival at Podewil and is expected to be staged in June 2027 at the Tischlerei of the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
Singers from our ensemble or instrumentalists from our orchestra visit schools to give a presentation of their singing or playing. They talk about their lives as musicians and answer questions from the young audience. Following this personal introduction, a visit to an opera rehearsal or performance offers the opportunity to hear and see the artists in action on stage or in the orchestra pit.
Dates by individual arrangement Rehearsal visits free of charge
Evening performance visits €10.00 per pupil
