Offers for schools and nurseries, teachers and educators
Opera is best experienced and appreciated when seen and felt in person. Furthermore, the diverse range of operatic subjects offers the opportunity to explore themes in an interdisciplinary way and, through the medium of musical theatre, to gain new perspectives on social or historical issues. We offer a range of educational programmes for school groups, designed to introduce each age group to the genre and its unique characteristics. Teachers have the opportunity to learn about or expand their knowledge of music theatre teaching methods with us.

Guided tours offer a chance to take a peek behind the scenes. Here, the gigantic stage sets await their moment in the spotlight, or you can step onto the Main Stage yourself, where opera singers belt out their arias. The Deutsche Oper Berlin is an exciting place full of possibilities, with plenty to discover. On a guided tour, school classes or nursery groups gain an insight into our opera house, can look into the orchestra pit and learn how stage technicians, the props department and other teams prepare for a performance.

Nursery groups approx. 30 minutes
Cost

Opera workshops are the perfect way for everyone to prepare for a visit to the opera. Who is in love with whom? Does the story end happily or in death? What was the directorial team thinking when they staged it? And what does a visit to the opera actually involve? We offer pre- or post-performance workshops for selected productions, which school groups can book free of charge in conjunction with a visit to the opera. Not only are pupils introduced to the plot of the opera, but they also engage playfully with the theatrical language, the staging and the music. The workshop takes place at the opera house or at the school, subject to individual arrangement.
We also offer workshops to prepare for or follow up on visits to the children’s operas Around the World in 80 Days and Hamed & Sherifa.
Duration
approx. 90 mins, free of charge
Cost of attending a performance
Morning school performances: €8.00 per pupil
Evening performances: €10.00 per pupil
Visits to rehearsals on the Main Stage or in the orchestra rehearsal hall provide a particularly vivid and immediate insight into the work of musicians at an opera house. During visits to rehearsals on the Main Stage, the orchestra can be observed in the orchestra pit whilst the singers rehearse alongside them on stage. For classes and courses with a particular interest in music, a visit to the orchestra rehearsal room is ideal for experiencing the orchestra’s rehearsal work up close. During the visit, pupils learn more about the unique aspects and challenges of a musician’s career at a major opera house.
Dates by individual arrangement, free of charge
In the instrument presentation «Four Wins» four musicians from our orchestra introduce their instruments, play excerpts from well-known operas and invite the children to have a go at playing the instruments themselves. There is plenty to discover and learn about the profession of an opera orchestra musician. Two string instruments, a woodwind instrument and a brass instrument will be featured.
Duration
approx. 80–90 mins.
Cost
€5.00 per person

They’ll also learn more about what it’s like to be a percussionist in the opera.
