Dramma giocoso in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte
First performed on 29th October, 1787 at Prague
Premiered at the Deutsche Oper Berlin on 16th October, 2010

E. T. A. Hoffmann called Don Giovanni «the opera of all operas.» The philosopher Søren Kierkegaard even included the piece in his major work, where the title character is described as „the incarnation of the genius of all that is sensual.” Don Giovanni is variously seen as an erotic womanizer or a ruthless lecher, as Dionysus incarnate or a contemptible sex offender. In Roland Schwab’s production, too, he appears fragmented. Driven by an insatiable desire for more, he staggers between revelry, orgies of violence and ascetic withdrawal. Making his house debut, you’ll have the chance to see Iurii Samoilov as the “seducer of all seducers,” alongside Olga Peretyatko in the role of Donna Elvira. You may, however, be very familiar with Tommaso Barea, who returns here as Giovanni’s cynical servant Leporello following his great success in 2023. Stefano Montanari conducts this revival in his signature repertoire before showcasing a completely different side of himself with the premiere of Otello.
