We are delighted to present you the first season in fresh design by our new team at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. We have set to work for our audience with full creative energy and great enthusiasm.

There are plenty of new experiences in store for you this season, without having to miss out on your favorites from the theater’s repertoire. To better convey our content and vision, each season will feature a motto. Our 26/27 motto, «Make Love…», draws a connection to our times and their challenges, whilst inviting you to fill in the three dots of the famous 1960s slogan in your own way – playfully, humorously and with space for creative thought. Especially in such challenging times, we are convinced that the opera, as a place of community, is more important than ever – a place where we can come together and immerse ourselves in utopian worlds.

Seven premieres await you on the main stage, including brand new works such as the world premiere of Good Vibes Only, written by the young Icelandic composer Bára Gísladóttir, our Composer in Residence, exploring themes from our social media-influenced society. For our opening premiere, we are looking forward to staging the first German production of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s monumental opus Mittwoch aus Licht . You’ll discover our new musical leadership team, consisting of three charismatic conductors who will shape the company’s musical direction. You will encounter a number of exciting artists you may already know from other contexts, who are making their opera debut in Berlin, such as the directors Susanne Kennedy (Mittwoch aus Licht), Milo Rau (The Flying Dutchman), the Flemish collective FC Bergman (Così fan tutte) and the prominent photographer Wolfgang Tillmans (stage design for the War Requiem). As always, you can expect distinguished guest singers on stage, and the revitalised ensemble of the Deutsche Oper.

We want to open up the Deutsche Oper Berlin as widely as possible, to breathe new life into our unique venue with its two stages, foster connections, engage with the city and promote dialogue with other art forms. To this end, we are launching a new programme line: Unlimited, with the Tischlerei at its heart. A whole variety of voices will be heard, offering yet another, entirely different perspective on opera. There will be guest performances, and we will embark on artistic journeys in unusual locations on our own premises and at partner venues across the city. For the first time, the Deutsche Oper will have a Composer in Residence, and also a Poet in Residence, Fiston Mwanza Mujilla. You will be able to experience both of them in very different ways throughout the season.

Please join us on the last weekend in August for a special event to kick off our first season under new management. Berlin-based visual artist Rirkrit Tiravanija will be curating the weekend with us and exhibiting works of his own and of others in the Opera House from Saturday 29th August at 12pm until Sunday at 6pm. We look forward to meeting you in person at this opening event.
