Afrofuturist performance and conversation with Fiston Mwanza Mujila and Sofia Jernberg

Survivors of the sea flee to an island and build a new community there, beyond origin and embedded power. For the music theatre piece Sunville, Fiston Mwanza Mujila wrote the texts and Sofia Jernberg the music. Together they give an exclusive preview before their premiere at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Between Afrofuturism and spiritual jazz, the evening asks a simple question: How do we want to live?

Fiston Mwanza Mujila (Democratic Republic of Congo / Austria) is a writer and teaches African Literature in Graz. His novel Tram 83 (tr. Katharina Meyer and Lena Müller) received the Grand Prix du Premier Roman of the Société des Gens des Lettres.

Sofia Jernberg (Ethiopia / Sweden) is a singer and composer. Her work explores unconventional vocal techniques and connects free jazz and noise with music theatre and contemporary opera.
